Electra Distortion
This classic distortion circuit is a fairly easy one for beginners.
You can substitute the transistor with just about any one that has the same pinout and the clipping diodes with any kind to try it and see what it sounds like.
Here is a vero layout I did of an Electra type circuit, again you can try differnet diodes, transistors to get the sound you like.
